Preventing Hockey Injuries with the Help of Braces and Supports

Hockey is a popular sport in America. While it cannot compete with football or baseball, many people in the country not only watch this sport, they engage in gameplay as often as possible. The medial collateral ligament is found on the inner portion of the knee joint and connects the shin and thigh bones. When this ligament is injured, it is typically referred to as a sprain, and the injury often arises from the knee being twisted during practice or a game. This may occur when the player turns and the skate doesn’t or when an opponent’s knee connects with the player’s knee.

The injury is usually caused in one of two ways. In a collision the medial ligament can be damaged when an opponent applies a force (usually from their knee) to the outside aspect of the leg, just above the knee. Alternatively, the medial ligament can be damaged if the skate gets caught and the player tries to turn to the side, away from the planted leg. Knee braces help to provide additional stability for the joint to reduce the risk of these types of injury occurring.

Knee and shoulder injuries aren’t the only two types seen in hockey. High ankle sprains have been reported and groin strains are not unheard of. Helmets are of great help in minimizing the risk of a concussion, but these injuries do occur, and players should always wear mouth guards.
